Looking back on her childhood and adolescence, Alison Bechtel considers her relationship with her emotionally distant father whose complex identities included funeral-home director, English teacher, obsessive restorer of their Victorian house, and closeted homosexual.
The narrative is by turns funny and heart-breaking, and the way the author contrasts her own coming-out as lesbian with her father’s tortured sexuality is brilliantly handled (and drawn).
The author has described her book as a ‘family tragicomic’
