UWC Book Club

The Blank Wall

by Elisabeth Sanxay Holding

Thursday, 15th October at 6.30pm

(rescheduled from July)

Book Club takes place on the third Thursday of every month at 6.30pm in the Library. There, over a glass or two of wine, we compare views about a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction. After an hour or so of lively discussion we then adjourn to the dining room, where we have club supper together. Members are also able to join the discussion remotely via Zoom.

‘For my money she’s the top suspense writer of them all.’ – Raymond Chandler

First published in 1947, The Blank Wall is a rare example of a noir thriller told from a woman’s perspective, in which the dangers of war are mirrored by the quiet, yet equally treacherous, perils of home life.

Lucia Holley, a mother of two living just outside New York with a husband serving in the Navy during the Second World War, finds herself unexpectedly entangled in a web of criminal activity when she sets out to protect her 17-year-old daughter from blackmail.

Holding blends the psychological thriller genre with the domestic in a fast-paced crime novel that is both gripping and unsettling.

The Blank Wall was filmed in 1949 as The Reckless Moment, with James Mason, and in 2001 as The Deep End, starring Tilda Swinton.

The novel is now published by Persephone and available as a Grey, a Classic and an e-Book.

This is a hybrid event.
