SUMMARY:Lady Russell Women's Literature & History Salon | September 2026 - In a Different Voice & Cat's Eye
DESCRIPTION:  \nUWC Lady Russell Women’s Literature & History Salon\nMonday\, 7th September 2026 at 6.30pm\nIn a Different Voice & Cat’s Eye \nKey Text: In a Different Voice (1982) by Carol Gilligan \nContemporary Literature: Cat’s Eye (1988) by Margaret Atwood \nSeptember’s Lady Russell Salon pairs a landmark of feminist psychology with one of Margaret Atwood’s most intimate and psychologically rich novels. \n \nCarol Gilligan’s In a Different Voice (1982) began as a critique of Lawrence Kohlberg’s influential model of moral development — a model built\, Gilligan argued\, almost entirely on the study of male subjects\, with the result that female responses were read as a developmental shortfall rather than a different kind of moral reasoning. Her counter-argument — that women typically reason from an ethic of care and relationship rather than abstract principle — was at once specific and sweeping. It reshaped feminist scholarship and gave many women a language for something they had long felt but not been able to name. \nMargaret Atwood’s Cat’s Eye (1988) approaches the formation of female identity through fiction. Elaine Risley\, a painter returning to Toronto for a retrospective exhibition\, is drawn back into memories of her childhood — and particularly of a friendship that was also a sustained act of psychological cruelty. The novel is a study in how women internalise others’ perceptions of themselves\, and how long it takes — if it happens at all — to see clearly. \nThe evening invites discussion of both the intellectual arguments and the personal resonances these texts provoke. \nThis is an in-person event only. \nIf you wish to join us in the Dining Room after the discussion don’t forget to book your place in the Dining Room. \nClick here to explore other UWC Lady Russell Women’s History Salon events coming up this year. \nWe may be taking photos throughout the event that will be used for our social media and marketing\, do please let the host know if you do not wish your image to be used.

SUMMARY:UWC Reading Group | Pure\, White and Deadly by John Yudkin
DESCRIPTION:  \nUWC Reading Group\nThursday\, 10th September at 6.30pm\nPure\, White and Deadly by John Yudkin\nScience Writing\nWritten by a Professor of Nutrition for a lay audience\, this 1972 book argued that the post-WWII increase in obesity\,  diabetes and cardiovascular disease was not connected to eating fatty food\, but instead was connected to a marked increase in eating sugar (sucrose). The backlash from the sugar industry was immediate and sustained\, and Yudkin’s professional reputation was severely damaged. Nevertheless\, as laid out in the introduction to this 1986 edition\, subsequent research has proved beyond doubt that Yudkin was right. Sugar is at best nutritionally useless and at worst\, a killer. \n \nFor those of you joining us at the Clubhouse\, please do stay and enjoy a meal in the Dining Room. Don’t forget to reserve your place for dinner. \nClick here to explore the Reading Group’s Library and to see what other genres they will be discovering in the coming months. \nThis is hybrid event. \nWe may be taking photos throughout the event that will be used for our social media and marketing\, do please let the host know if you do not wish your image to be used.

SUMMARY:Third Tuesday Lunch | September 2026
DESCRIPTION:  \nThird Tuesday Lunch\nTuesday\, 15th September at 1.00pm\n“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.” — Angela Davis \nJoin us for a charming and social lunch with like-minded ladies. The Third Tuesday Lunch Club is one of our most loved monthly gatherings — relaxed\, informal\, and always good company. Whether you’re a long-standing member or joining us for the first time\, you’ll find a warm welcome and a table worth lingering at. \nOrder whatever takes your fancy from our seasonal menu and pay only for what you order on the day. No fixed menus\, no fuss — just good food and easy conversation. \nThis September\, those who’d like to extend the afternoon are warmly invited to join us for a visit to The Women’s Library @ 100 at the London School of Economics\, Holborn — an exhibition that feels\, in many ways\, like it was made for a room full of UWC members. \nThe Women’s Library is the UK’s oldest and largest collection on the history of the women’s movement\, and this year it turns one hundred. The exhibition marks the occasion by bringing together over 60 items — many never before displayed publicly — drawn from its rich and diverse collections. Spanning international relations\, equality campaigning\, political representation\, child protection\, and feminist publishing\, it tells the story of women who refused to be forgotten\, and the activists\, scholars\, and ordinary women who ensured their stories were preserved. \nFor a club founded in the same spirit of women’s progress and solidarity\, it’s a deeply fitting way to spend an afternoon. \nThis is an in person event only. \nClick here to discover other Third Tuesday Lunch Club expeditions coming up in 2026. \nWe may be taking photos throughout the event that will be used for our social media and marketing\, do please let the host know if you do not wish your image to be used.

SUMMARY:UWC Open Evening & Dinner | September 2026
DESCRIPTION:  \nUWC Open Evening & Dinner\nThe third Tuesday of every month – Upcoming events:\nTuesday\, 15th September 2026\nTuesday\, 20th October 2026\nTuesday\, 17th November 2026\nPresentation and tour of the Clubhouse followed by an optional buffet dinner. \nThis is one of the loveliest ways to support the Club. Join us from 6.30pm to welcome prospective members\, share what you enjoy most about being part of the UWC\, and enjoy dinner on us — complimentary for all members supporting the evening. \nIf you know someone who’d be a wonderful fit — a friend\, a colleague\, a niece\, a classmate — please do pass this along or bring her with you. \nNo preparation needed. Just come along\, be yourself\, and let her see what you already know. \nRemember\, that for those members supporting the Club at the Presentation & Tour\, you can enjoy dinner for free. Members’ can register their attendance via the Members’ Portal in the usual way. \nFor those who have yet to discover the UWC… \nIn 1886\, a group of women came together with a straightforward but radical idea: that women needed a club of their own in London — a place for connection\, conversation\, and community that was built around them and belonged entirely to them. The University Women’s Club has been that place ever since. \nOur Open Evening is an invitation to come and experience it. We host prospective members once a month at our Clubhouse at 2 Audley Square\, Mayfair\, for a presentation and tour of the house — the Library\, the Drawing Room\, the restaurant and bar\, the terrace garden\, the bedrooms — followed by an optional buffet dinner. Current members will be on hand throughout the evening to talk honestly about what membership means to them. \nThe UWC is wholly owned and managed by its members\, and that matters: the women you meet on the evening are not staff or ambassadors\, they are the Club. Membership is open to women from a wide range of professional and academic backgrounds. You don’t need a specific qualification — you need curiosity\, ambition\, and a desire to connect. \nNon-members can register to attend the UWC Open Evening via this link or via the link below.. \nThis is an in person event only. \nWe may be taking photos throughout the event that will be used for our social media and marketing\, do please let the host know if you do not wish your image to be used.

SUMMARY:UWC Book Club - East Lynne by Ellen Wood (Mrs Henry Wood)
DESCRIPTION:  \nUWC Book Club\nEast Lynne\nby Ellen Wood (Mrs Henry Wood)\nThursday\, 17th September at 6.30pm\n                   \n \n     ‘A sensation in itself it became an unprecedented publishing phenomenon’. (Daily Telegraph) \n It was one of the most popular Victorian sensation novels. First published in 1861\, East Lynne has it all: murder\, missing persons\, adultery\, divorce\, death\, jealousy\, treachery and suspense in spades.  \n Lady Isabel Vine leaves her husband and children to run off with her villainous lover. After he deserts her\, she returns home to her husband and his new wife disguised as a governess caring for her own children. Readers were both shocked and enthralled\, with the novel playing on women’s anxieties about duty\, class\, marriage\, motherhood and divorce. \n The novel became one of the biggest best-sellers in fiction history and evolved into a successful stage production. The play was staged so often that it was estimated some version was seen by audiences in either England or North America every week for over 40 years. \n N.B. This Oxford World Classics edition returns to the racy narrative of the first edition\, rather than the subsequent ‘improved’ versions hitherto reproduced by modern editors\, so it is worth reading this edition. \n This is a hybrid event. \nClick here for more information about joining the UWC Book Club\, to see what other books the Book Club will be reading in the coming months and to explore the Book Club Archives. \nWe may be taking photos throughout the event that will be used for our social media and marketing\, do please let the host know if you do not wish your image to be used. \n

DESCRIPTION:  \nUWC Games Group Get-Together\nTuesday\, 22nd September at 6.30pm\nThe Games Group is a relaxed and informal way for members to come together\, enjoy a game or two and spend time in one another’s company. \nRather than following a regular programme of events\, members who express an interest in joining the Group are connected so they can arrange their own games and get-togethers — whether that’s a game between two or three members\, or a larger gathering when diaries allow. \nEvery now and again\, however\, we’ll help get the group together. Following our recent email\, Members were invited to choose a date for our next gathering\, and the consensus was clear: Tuesday evening! \nJoin us at the Club for a game or two\, an opportunity to meet fellow members who share your love of games\, and a chance to explore our new Games Library. No regular commitment required — just come along\, play\, and enjoy the company. \nWe have a handful of games in our Library\, but if you have a particular game that you wish to share\, please do bring it along! \nThis is an in person event only. \nWe may be taking photos throughout the event that will be used for our social media and marketing\, do please let the host know if you do not wish your image to be used.

SUMMARY:Lady Russell Women's Literature & History Salon | October 2026 - The Politics of Reality & How I Learned to Drive
DESCRIPTION:  \nUWC Lady Russell Women’s Literature & History Salon\nMonday\, 5th October 2026 at 6.30pm\nThe Politics of Reality & How I Learned to Drive \nKey Text: The Politics of Reality by Marilyn Frye \nContemporary Literature: How I Learned to Drive (1997) by Paula Vogel \nMarilyn Frye’s philosophy of oppression meets a Pulitzer Prize-winning play about survival — an evening of rare intellectual and emotional depth. \nOctober’s Lady Russell Salon brings together a foundational text of feminist philosophy and one of the most acclaimed works in contemporary American drama. \nMarilyn Frye’s The Politics of Reality (1983) is a collection of essays that has earned its place on feminist reading lists not through academic complexity but through exceptional clarity. Frye’s most celebrated image — the birdcage — describes oppression as a structure whose individual elements may seem harmless or even invisible in isolation\, but which\, when viewed together\, form an inescapable constraint. Her essays on oppression\, sexism\, and the nature of power remain as analytically sharp today as when they were written. \nPaula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive (1997) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play told through the language and structure of driving lessons. At its heart it is a story about the long reach of power over a young woman’s life — told with a formal inventiveness that refuses straightforward victimhood and demands that the audience hold complexity. It is a remarkable piece of writing\, and a more illuminating pairing with Frye than it might at first appear. \n\nThis is an in-person event only.
