There\, over a glass or two of wine\, we compare views about a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction. After an hour or so of lively discussion we then adjourn to the dining room\, where we have club supper together. Members are also able to join the discussion remotely via Zoom. \nIn 1946\, when she was 23\, Emma Smith went to India to work with a documentary film unit. On her return she took up residence\, and worked alone with her typewriter\, in the Hôtel de Tournon\, Paris\, or sometimes\, in the heat of the summer\, on the banks of the Seine. The result was The Far Cry. \nThe novel centres around Teresa\, aged fourteen\, and her cantankerous father who\, in his anxiety to spare her from the clutches of his second wife\, her mother\, undertakes a formidable journey with her from England to his other daughter in the north of India.   We observe Teresa and her responses to the people she meets and to India itself. \nThe Far Cry was published to great acclaim in 1949 and awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction.
