Join us for a UWC Music Club, Talk & Concert hosted by Luci Briginshaw and Eleanor Meynell who will grace the Club with a selection of music by the late, great Peter Warlock.
Peter Warlock (born Philip Heseltine) was a unique and ambiguous character in the musical landscape. Most famous for his ‘Capriol Suite’, he mainly wrote and published songs and became known as a miniaturist. Entirely self-taught and unapologetic about it, he declared that a composer should be allowed to write how he wanted to write without the ‘tags and cliches culled from the works of others. His style is so uniquely his own that his music is immediately identifiable: dark, yet with quirky humour and beautiful melodies with unusual highly chromatic harmonies. Capable of writing in a very wide variety of styles from rumbustious swaggering drinking songs to delicate and poignant lullabies set to Jacobean and Elizabethan texts, Warlock was a fascinating composer of surprises, a true maverick.
Luci Briginshaw and Eleanor Meynell present a selection of previously neglected songs and some well-known gems. Together they released an album called ‘The Peter Warlock Songbook’ on the Convivial label in 2021 which received critical acclaim in the press.
“All songs are performed with the utmost delicacy, sensitivity and with such captivating passion from both Briginshaw and Meynell that I can physically feel the significance of every word, every slight intonation and every note impressed upon me.”
