‘The best detective story I have ever read’ – Dashiell Hammett.

In the Golden Age of British detective fiction in the 1920s and 1930s, four female writers became known as the ‘Queens of Crime.’ They were Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, Margery Allingham, and Ngaio Marsh. For many readers, Marsh was the best of them.

Death in a White Tie, one of her most popular novels, is set in London at the height of the Season where debutantes and chaperones are planning their next balls. And where a blackmailer who extorts money from wealthy women is stalking his next victim. At Scotland Yard Chief Detective Inspector Roderick Alleyn hears something is up and plants a friend at the scene to investigate. But blackmail turns to murder before Alleyn, after several red herrings and plot twists, can eventually solve the case.
