The University Women's Club Membership Card

Who may join?

University Women's Club membership is open to Graduate and Professional women of varied backgrounds and interests and includes lawyers, scientists, writers and musicians, as well as Executive and Business women who find the Audley Square location in the heart of Mayfair safe, pleasant and very convenient.

Over the years, the Club has attracted many well-known names, from Countess Gradiva, who led an all-women expedition in the Himalayas in the 1950s, to Phyliss Pearsall, a cartographer who founded the first A-Z company, and the actress Greer Garson.

Membership Application

  • A well-stocked library of books covering a wide range of subjects, either to browse on the Club premises or to borrow for reading over a longer period.
  • A wonderful setting for a relaxing few hours, alone or in company.
  • A venue with no room hire charges for your private parties and functions.   Catering for buffet or waitress service can be arranged.
  • A warm welcome, and often accommodation at reasonable rates, in over 30 other clubs around the world with whom the Club has reciprocal arrangements.
  • The Club now sells Gift Vouchers that can be used as part-payment for any Club service. These make charming and useful gifts for fellow Members.

Protocol

On entering the premises, Members and their guests are requested to sign the Register kept at Reception.

Male guests, accompanied by a Member, are welcome.

Members and their guests are expected to be dressed appropriately.   Gentlemen are normally expected to wear jackets and ties.

Personal tipping of Club staff is prohibited.   There is a "Tip Box" at Reception to which Members may contribute.   The contents of this box are shared amongst all of the staff – including those who are not generally seen by Members.

Membership Subscriptions

Membership is open to Graduate and Professional women of varied backgrounds and interests and includes lawyers, scientists, writers and musicians, as well as Executive and Business women who find the Audley Square location in the heart of Mayfair safe, pleasant and very convenient.

Annual subscription fees for 2007-8 from 1 September 2007 are as follows:

Note for Junior Graduates

Junior Graduates who join after their 26th birthday must pay an entrance fee of £150 and a subscription of:

60% of the Town rate between her 26th and 27th birthday,
70% of the Town rate between her 27th and 28th birthday,
80% of the Town rate between her 28th and 29th birthday,
90% of the Town rate between her 29th and 30th birthday

and thereafter at the full rate.

Note for Young Members

Sixth Form pupils introduced from the GSA schools pay a subscription of:

50% of the Town rate at age 25
60% of the Town rate at age 26
70% of the Town rate at age 27
80% of the Town rate at age 28
90% of the Town rate at age 29

The University Women's Club has reciprocal arrangements with over 30 other clubs throughout the world, most of which offer accommodation to our Members. They include the Metropolitan in San Francisco, the Women's Club in Sydney and The Helena May Club in Hong Kong.   See our Reciprocal Clubs page for details.

Today's membership stands at almost 1,200 and includes many celebrated women such as Baroness P.D. James, Baroness Betty Boothroyd, Sheila Hancock, Sandi Toksvig, Sarah Walker, Katharine Whitehorn, Dame Judi Dench, Prue Leith, Baroness Blackstone, Barbara Mills and Dr Hannan Ashrawi.

Gift Vouchers

Reception has a stock of Club Gift Vouchers in a variety of denominations.   They may be used (by Members only) in part-payment for any Club expense, such as events, meals, bedrooms and subscriptions.   If you are looking for a thoughtful and useful present for a fellow Member, you need look no further.

Member-Get-Member Scheme

Any Member who introduces a new Member to the Club will be offered her choice of a bottle of Champagne or a meal in the Dining Room.

Debenture Scheme

The Debenture Scheme enables Members to lend money to the Club by taking out a Debenture.   These can be purchased in units of £500, up to a ceiling of £5,000, and the Club promises repayment in 21 years.   No interest is paid on the loan, but the Club gives a discount on the annual subscription of Debenture Holders, related to the size of the loan and clearing bank interest rates.   Life Members receive a credit to spend at the Club instead.
